Song information
It was sometime between 2007 and 2009 that I recorded this Progressive Rock song,
back in the heyday of Macjams.com

In 2018 I did a remix, and in 2024 Tom Hellsten worked his mastering magic on it.

I STILL wasn't fully satisfied with the mix, so after posting 'The Cave (Shadow Game)'
I decided to do a total remix and remaster.

The song is based on one of Plato's most famous myths, found in Republic, Book X, 614b-621b,
and on teachings inscribed upon ancient Orphic gold funerary plates found all over Greece.

No confession of faith here, but myth tends to provide good subject matter for Prog-Rock tunes IMHO.

Anyway, it's been awhile since I posted a Prog tune. I hope some of you can appreciate this one!

Be well all!

PS:

'Lethe' means forgetfulness.

'Ananke' means necessity.

Lyrics
LETHE (The Myth Of Er)

I
A child of earth, and of starry heaven too,
fallen from great heights, into this world below;
to take a turn down here on this sorrowful weary wheel,
and try to burn out this desire that I feel.

And as I knelt to drink, I heard the prophet speak,
such words as these to me:

'When the draught you partake,
take care your thirst not to slake,
under the white cypress tree...'

II
I awake here, now I'm under Lethe's spell.
I drank too deeply from her intoxicating swell;
but now and then I get a glimpse it seems;
of something that the prophet said to me:

'When Lethe's draught takes effect,
all that you know you'll forget,
though it remains deep in your soul.
If in the life you've chosen,
on the path of virtue you go;
you may finally recollect.'

III
Lost in this shadowland;
I resolve to take a stand.
I gaze at the starry night.
I'm drawn towards the Light...

IV
I am a pilgrim on virtue's hallowed road.
The path less taken is where one finds the gold.
Ananke's spindle turns, revolves eternally;
the axis of this cosmic shadow that we see.

And when again I drink, and the prophet starts to speak;
I'll heed the words he says to me:

'When the draught you partake,
take care your thirst not to slake,
under the white cypress tree.'

Several of my all-time favorite bands are Rush and Yes, so I gravitate to this kind of music naturally. :)

Thanks bro!
I was a big fan of early YES and early RUSH. Also liked ELP, and King Crimson.
My absolute favorite was Jethro Tull; especially during the "Minstrel In The Gallery" and "Broadsword & the Beast" era (1975-1982).
Only liked one album by Genesis: "Selling England By The Pound" which I thought was genius. I found the rest of their music rather insipid.
Loved KANSAS as long as Kerry Livgren was with them.
Recently discovered GENTLE GIANT, but really have to be in a weird mood to enjoy them. Lol...
Soooo.... a lot of influences!
:-)
As far as newer prog goes I really liked the now short lived PROTO-KAW.
Neal Morse's solo work is outstanding, as is his super group FLYING COLORS.
I really love Prog. I just don't have the patience or the chops to be doing it all the time. Plus I'm really
an old folkie at heart...
Be well my friend!

When i hear wind, rain and thunder I stop what I'm doing and listen.  Love good prog that rocks.  That guitar solo with piano in the back is awesome and even better when you let it fly after that.  Love all the change ups, nice synths and ofcourse great singing.
