One of a kind.

i recorded this on a Roland XP-50 Music Workstation.
sometime in the late 90's i think.
what you are hearing is the Roland playing getting recorded into GarageBand as an live audio feed.

More nostagia. Sometimes I listen to some of my own earlier compositions and, in spite of the unprofessional mixing and mastering, find myself quite surprised at how well they turned out (all things considered).
It's fun to dig up these old gems ain't it Bill?
This has some very nice bluesy keyboard work.

the XP-50 was a cool instrument. you could record a track and play it back while recording another track along with it. i forgot how many tracks it could do. it also had a drum synth mode so you could play drums on the keys. but the best thing was you could also fix mistakes!
compared to today's gui interfaces, it was primitive. editing was extremely tedious, with only a small display screen and multiple button pushes to navigate to a track and fix errors. i spent a bit of time fixing up this song. that in itself was a strong motivator to practice the parts and go for the best take i could muster, since editing was a total pain in the ***.
i still have the XP-50. but i have only used it as a midi keyboard to control software synths on my computer. i've completely forgotten how to use all the other features the XP-50 has. i still love the feel of the keys and the way you can wring really emotive piano improvs on it (especially on GarageBand's Orchestra Steinway Grand Piano)
EDIT: Hey! i didn't know you can't type ASS on this site! EDIT2: apparently if you use ALL CAPS you can get away with it. sheesh...

Very cool tune.
When you talk about tedious editing, I can't help but think back to my first foray into digital music on my TI-99/4A in the early 80s. I eventually got a very primative composition program, but before then, I had to write a line of basic for each note - CALL SOUND (duration, frequency, volume).
Some things about the 80s I miss - parachutte pants for instance. Others, I don't.
Thanks for sharing a gem from the past.
